The Yco Painters' winning run in 1957-1958


On January 21, 1957, Yco captured its fourth straight National Open basketball crown, defeating San Miguel Brewery, 85-54, in the finale.


On July 27, 1957, the Redshirts retained the MICAA basketball title as they outclassed Seven-Up Bottlers, 79-67. Yco won the crown in 1954, lost to Seven-Up in 1955, and regained the title last year.


The 1958 National Open drew a field of 23 teams.  The seeded teams were Yco, Ysmael, 7-Up, San Miguel Brewery, UAAP selection, San Beda, Letran and Mapua Tech.

Qualified in the next round to join the eight seeded teams were Jose Rizal College, Gregorio Araneta Enterprise, De La Salle, Heacock's, Crispa-Floro, Philippine Air Lines, Yellow Taxi and Clark Field. 


Yellow Taxi halts Yco's incredible winning streak of 40 games on January 14, 1958. Days later, a vengeful Yco five was to smash Yellow Taxi, 99-55.

The Painters collect National Open championship number five on a 92-60 rout of 7-Up.

1960s: Yco vs Crispa



Charlie Badion scored 42 points to power Yco to a 113-94 victory over Crispa on April 19, 1960.


Yco rips Crispa, 75-72, in the MICAA opener in 1962.


Crispa wins its first major title in the 1960s when they defeated Yco, 97-92, in the first Metropolitan Basketball Association (MBA) title in 1962.

The Philippines' last two Asian Games basketball Gold


In the Tokyo Asian Games in 1958, the Philippines won their 3rd basketball Gold, defeating host Japan, 90-83, the Philippines, China and Japan all finished with a 4-1 record, the Nationals won the basketball crown in the first two stagings in 1951 and 1954.


In the 1962 Asian Games held in Jakarta, Indonesia, the Philippines captured its fourth basketball Gold, from thereon, the RP Nationals never won the Asian Games basketball competition with its best finish, a silver medal 28 years later in the 1990 Beijing Asiad.

1990 Philippine Basketball League (PBL) Challenge Cup


Imports will see action in the PBL's 2nd conference of the 1990 Season called Challenge Cup.


At left is Magnolia import Brent Carmichael. To the right is Agfa import Junie Lewis and Sarsi import Sean Paulfrey.


Philips Sardines, reinforced by former PBA import Andy Grosvenor, had a winning run during the eliminations.

1987 PABL Maharlika Cup finals: Magnolia vs Swift



Magnolia wins the 1987 PABL Maharlika Cup title over RFM-Swift Hotdogs, 3 games to 1.


Swift's tied the series at one game apiece by taking Game 2.

50 years ago: The 1960 UAAP and NCAA championships



50 years ago, the UE Warriors defeated the FEU Tamaraws, to win the UAAP Cage Crown. 


The following day on October 1, the Letran Knights edge out Jose Rizal College to win the NCAA title.
