Letran Knights is '79 NCAA champs


The champion team: Skipper Eddie Valdomero, Itoy Esguerra, Bong Aninon, 1979 NCAA MVP Mon San Juan, Tim Coloso, Noni Robles, William Alberto, Antonio de Leon, Ted McKinney, Eduardo Ducut, Bobby Valenzuela, Mon Navales, Chito Mojica, Boyet Alano and Toots Gavieres.


On September 15, 1979, the Letran Knights shaded the MIT Cardinals, 80-78, to win the NCAA title, bagging both the first and second rounds. It was the first time that a NCAA team won the crown by winning both rounds. It was Letran's sixth senior title. The last time they were victorious was in 1970, which was nine years ago when the quintet was powered by the trio of David Regullano, Ricky Pineda and Rudolf Hines. 

One week later, the Letran Squires won the NCAA Junior crown for a double championship celebration.



First round results for Letran (5-1 record); 92-87 win vs La Salle on July 14; 84-88 loss to San Beda on July 21; 93-81 win vs Mapua on July 24; 94-91 win vs Trinity on July 29; 135-106 win vs SSC on August 5; 94-86 win vs JRC on August 9.
