After 47 years, the UP Maroons wins their first UAAP title in 1986



The University of the Philippines Maroons swept their best-of-three finals series over defending two-time champions University of the East Warriors, winning Game 1, 86-75 and the title-clinching Game 2, 98-89.

1985 PABL Invitationals: ESQ vs Lagerlite






A memorable PABL finals showdown between ESQ Merchants and Lagerlite Beer in 1985.


Lagerlite had a twice-to-beat advantage over ESQ, after going unbeaten in the 8-team semifinal round. The Merchants forced a winner-take-all with a 76-68 victory on June 7, handing the Beermen their first defeat in the tournament. The ESQ Merchants repeated with a close 88-87 win over Lagerlite on June 10, to win their third straight PABL title.


The Mythical five of the 1985 PABL Invitationals were Jojo Lastimosa of Mama's Love, voted the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, Allan Caidic of Lagerlite, Joseph Pelaez of ERDC, and ESQ guards Adonis Tierra and Ricky Cui.

1986 PBA Open (newspaper clips)


Billy Ray Bates scored a conference high of 69 points in Ginebra's 140-130 win over Magnolia at the end of the first round of eliminations on October 16. Tanduay beat Great Taste, 114-108, at the start of the second round in the nightcap.


On October 19, Shell beat Ginebra and tied their rivals with five wins and two losses. Ginebra import Michael Hackett was held down to his lowest output of 16 points.


Two days after on October 21, Shell takes solo leadership after beating Great Taste.


Ginebra repeated over Alaska in their second meeting on October 23. The gallant Milkmen forces extension. Ginebra scored 24 points in the overtime period.


The Manila Beer Brewmasters surge ahead on top of the standings by repeating against Great Taste on October 30.

NCAA season 65: SSC makes it back-to-back





In 1989, San Sebastian College retains the NCAA crown by defeating the Altas of Perpetual Help College of Rizal, winning their best-of-three series, 2 games to 1. 


Earlier in the tournament, Perpetual Help College took the First Round Flag with a 4-1 won-loss slate.
